Basic setup

Like any machine, it needs some basic setup before running, or putting it to work.
For the Optimum BF20, some basic setup is made directly from factory but I recomand to check them before running.
Here you can find some basic details about how you must check the setup of your milling machine. The tutorial is good for almost every milling machine, it's not only for Optimum BF20 or Grizzly G0704.
Basically you need a set of regular spanners, a flat screw driver, a set of Allen keys and a dial gauge. The dial gauge must be in the "hundreds" domanin, and not the extrasensitive one in the "thousand" domain.
This means that the accuracy of reading should be in 0.01mm range. If you try to use a dial gauge with higher accuracy (0.001mm) you woun't be able to set your machine corectley because of the fabrication tolerances.
In the Optimum german catalogue you can find at page 128 a dial gauge with 0.01 mm accuracy, and a magnetic stand for it. OEM code: 3385090 and 3356650.
Another useful accessory is the precision spirit level, like the one below.

This little thing will help you to setup your machine to 0 relative to ground. Is "must have" tool, otherwise, if you don't put your machine to 0, the consequences in time will be obvious.
 - irregular wearing of sliding paths
 - problems with the rest of settings
 - the milling process will be affected so you woun't be able to mill identical 2 pieces of material.
 - the driving screws will be overloaded in minimum one direction
